MICKEY: Hola Rosemary, how’s it going?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: Things are good! 2012 seems to be off to a running start.

MICKEY: I appreciate your time for doing this. Now, I’m familiar with what you do. But for those who don’t, please tell us what you do?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: I write a music blog in San Diego. The main feature of my site is daily listings of shows around town, but I also post photos, videos, and occasional show and restaurant reviews. Sometimes I just post whatever is on my mind. My site opened a lot of door for me, and I currently help The Casbah with marketing, I write for SoundDiego.com, I do some band booking, and have started dipping my toes in PR and consulting for some local acts.

MICKEY: How long has SD: Dialed In been around and how did it happen?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: I worked in advertising for several years and had a lot of downtime, so starting in 2003 I started to write long winded online journals. When I realized people were actually reading, I learned to seperate being personal from being private and decided to make the music-centric site in 2006.

MICKEY: What I love about your work (SD: Dialed In) is that you have a passion for music and, of course, local music. There’s some who do these types of blogs just for kicks, but I noticed that you deliver the goods to your followers. Tell me, do you think people are more likely to follow music blogs rather than print publications?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: I think people who want to follow music will find their favorites. I used to read everything…print, online, MySpace bulletins, and tons of other blogs. Lately I have less time, so I graze Facebook and Twitter and Google alerts, but to be honest, most of the music reading I do is filtering press releases. I think there is still a need for print and blogs, finding writers you trust who act as filters for what’s ok and what is really worth seeing and hearing. I have found that I’ve backed off on band reviews because why describe something that you can just go on YouTube or Spotify and listen to on your own?

MICKEY: Well played. I totally agreed. What shows, are you excited to see in the following month in San Diego? What can you recommend us?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: I think there are some great shows coming to town, but i’m particularly excited about some of the local shows. The Howls have a CD release on January 27th at The Casbah, and Jesse LaMonaca and the Dime Novels have their CD release on February 18, also at The Casbah. For touring acts, I’m looking forward to Nada Surf at 4th and B on Januarty 28th and we have some surprises, too… several bands performing at Coachella will be playing San Diego between the two weekends, but we can’t announce those just yet.

MICKEY: Ahh a cliffhanger moment. Can’t wait for those shows to be announced. Now, are you familiar with the Tijuana Local Music Scene?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: Sadly, I’m not to familiar with the scene across the border. My best friend lived by the old skate park when we were in junior high and I spent a lot of time at the dance clubs in high school. That was many years ago. I don’t have a passport, so I went to a Nortec Collective show at Black Box last year, but until I get a passport, the hassle makes it a bit prohibitive. I like reading your site and hearing about all the great things Derrik Chinn is doing to demystify Tijuana.

MICKEY: What’s next for SD: Dialed In and the great Rosemary Bystrak?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: I wish I knew! I take everything as it comes. The music industry is really tough and I’m always looking for more opportunities while trying to keep a roof over my head. I’m helping with some booking at a venue and it’s slow coming but I’m hoping to lock some things in soon. I’ll keep being a cheerleader for San Diego music and look forward to some of the big things I get to be a part of like North Park Festival Of Arts, Comic-Con, The Addams Avenue Fair, and Rocktoberfest to name a few. I’m also hoping I get to go back to SXSW this year.

MICKEY: Anything else you would like to add?

ROSEMARY BYSTRAK: Thanks for what you do! Our region is best when everyone has the same goal of promoting local music and arts, and I appreciate what you’re doing with Cantaloop. Once I have my passport, you’ll probably have to kick me out of México.

MICKEY: That won’t be the case and, of course, you’re welcome to visit us anytime. I really appreciate this, thank you so much.
